DCP Worker for macOS

Native menu bar app · Apple Silicon and Intel · macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later

Beta. The macOS Worker isn't officially supported yet. It's a build for testers who want to run DCP work, including WebGPU, natively on a Mac. There's no automatic update and no fleet or silent install. When a new build is needed, it's published here.

Found a bug? Email ops@distributive.network and include the versions from the app's About tab.

1 Install

Open the DMG and drag DCP Worker into Applications. The app is signed and notarized, so it opens normally.

Launch it from Applications or Spotlight. It lives in the menu bar (no Dock icon): click its icon to open the panel.

2 Register

Registering links the worker to your DCP account, so its earnings and settings are managed from the DCP Portal. Without it, the worker still runs and earnings go to an unclaimed account.

Once registered, the earnings account, compute groups, CPU and GPU limits and more are set from the Portal. The app picks up changes automatically.

3 Start computing

On the main screen, click Start to begin, and Stop to pause. Or turn on Only run workloads when computer is idle in Settings, and the worker starts by itself once you've been away for the chosen time and stops when you come back.

4 Using the app

The icon row at the top switches between:

The window icon next to the power button opens the same app in a normal, resizable window, which can also go full screen. The power button quits the worker.

Join Global Compute Group
On by default. Also takes work from the public DCP network, not just your compute groups.
Only run workloads when computer is idle
Off by default. When on, the worker runs only after the idle threshold (5 minutes by default).
Enable WebGPU
On by default. Lets GPU jobs use your Mac's GPU through Metal.

5 Updating

Download the new DMG from this page and drag the app into Applications again, replacing the old one. Your worker ID and registration are kept.

6 Uninstalling

The DMG also contains Uninstall DCP Worker. Open it and confirm: it quits the worker, moves the app to the Trash and removes its settings. Your DCP wallet and identity keys in ~/.dcp are not touched, and the worker ID is kept, so reinstalling brings back the same registered worker.

7 Troubleshooting

8 How it runs

The app runs an always-on worker service, which talks to the DCP scheduler and uses almost no resources while idle. While computing, it starts the evaluator, the sandbox that runs job code (JavaScript, WebAssembly and WebGPU), with one process per active sandbox. The evaluator talks to the worker service only over the Mac's local loopback network.
